Entrance and office building
Jailhouse, Graz Jakomini
The project reduces cubic capacity above ground. Only the detached administrative building and the day-release prisoners’ building lie above ground. The new administrative building moves away from the existing buildings and becomes a solitaire. The first floor is level with the surrounding terrain. By becoming part of the outer walls, the underground workshops reduce the wall’s height towards the city. The city profits from the jail´s friendlier appearance while maintaining the same security level. The wall´s placement in a water basin emotionally eases the impression of blockage.
